Education & Experience
B.A., Haverford College
J.D., Harvard Law School (magna cum ladue)

Andy is an experienced New Hampshire attorney who has tried more than 65 cases to New Hampshire juries.  He specializes in complex civil and criminal litigation and appeals.

Andy came to Getman, Schulthess & Steere after a sixteen year career as a criminal defense lawyer.  He was a member of the New Hampshire Public Defender Major Crimes Unit, which was responsible for homicide defense statewide.  After that, Andy served as the director of the criminal practice clinic at the Franklin Pierce Law Center.  In 2004, Andy was honored as the New Hampshire Association of  Criminal Defense Lawyer's Champion Of Justice.  Andy maintains a lively criminal practice at the trial, appellate and post-conviction levels.

On the civil side, Andy focuses his practice on cases involving medium sized and closely held companies.  His cases run the gamut from intellectual property litigation involving trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets, to business tort cases involving claims of breach of fiduciary duty and deceptive trade practices.  Andy's recent cases include:  representing a gasoline distributor in a case brought under the Federal Petroleum Marketing Practices Act; defending a class action brought against a crematorium for the alleged mishandling of human remains; challenging the legality of the Town of Salem's sewer assessment ordinance on behalf of a real estate development company; and representing a health insurance brokerage company in a case raising questions of first impression concerning the contractual and statutory obligations of carriers, brokers and customers.  Andy also defends companies in serious tort cases involving claims such as defamation, invasion of privacy, negligence and violation of the dram shop act.

Andy has briefed and argued a number of important cases in both the New Hampshire Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.  The case of Remsburg v. Docusearch, Inc., 149 N.H. 148 (2003), for example, gained national attention because it was one of the first cases to address the question of whether individuals have an enforceable right to privacy in their social security numbers.  In White v. Coplan, 399 F.3d 18 (1st Cir. 2005), in which Andy filed an amicus brief, the U.S. Court of Appeals limited the reach of a state supreme court decision which restricted a criminal defendant's right to confront his accuser through cross-examination.  Some of Andy's briefs and motions, and additional information about his practice, can be found at Andy's personal website, www.AndrewSchulman.com.
